Social enterprises and apps that protect our mental health are an essential download in these Covid times, and founders Aimée Louise Carton and Will Ben Simms have created the ultimate ‘Tech for Good’ app.KeepAppy is an app to track your mood, water intake, exercise levels, sleep schedule, food consumption, productivity levels and social engagements on any given day.

You might not yet have heard of Ethicart, but you will thank the ever-burgeoning sustainability sector. This Ireland startup deserves attention as do many other more areas associated with climate change and the issue of waste creation and disposal.Ethicart pioneered by committed environmentalists Laura Brennan, and Lara Páirceir helps inform users of the sustainability and ethical standards of the product the consumer is purchasing. They create a sustainability profile of a chosen product that splits the product’s rating into three categories: the production, packaging and the company that produces the good.Joe Biden's presidency can only bode well for the future of sustainable practices and let’s hope apps such as Ethicart gather momentum this year. What started off as a handful of products at Trinity campus is now partnering with leading supermarkets like SuperValu to cater to a wider audience.

The GAA, FAI and IRFU are among several national sports organisations that need to keep their players safe, get fans back into their venues, and play out their scheduled seasons in 2021. Fresh off their win of the Munster section of the Intertrade Seedcorn business competition for innovative startups, Feistim is hurtling into 2021 at a rate of knots. The Irish startup app only launched in early October and dealt with the challenges the pandemic has given sports teams across the globe. The app provides coaches with the ability to remotely monitor individuals, teams, and organisations’ performance. The coaches and management of a team can chat, send reminders, training schedules, and video clips to keep players up to date while also analysing players’ key performance metrics. Add in the ability to monitor players’ Covid status, and you have the must-have sports app for the coming season.

One of a string of promising educational-technology startups around the country Meantóir is the brainchild of Avril McMonagle. It provides specialist support services for early childhood educators and childcare service providers from 0-6 years old. The Donegal-based Meantóir has been in full-blown expansion mode, launching its app Mosaic, which will operate through two interlinked apps called ‘Mosaic Educator’ and ‘Mosaic Family’.The most profitable startup app will provide a storybook of a child’s educational developments, achievements, skills and samples of the child’s work for parents and nominated family members to enjoy. Online education is here to stay. Parents and teachers struggling to maintain student learning quality will be impressed by the Mosaic apps attention to detail.

The early childhood education sector in Europe is expected to reach revenues of €215 billion by 2025.  Increased demand is guaranteed with 15 million children of preschool age in Europe and particularly in Ireland. The area proves to be a thorn in the Government’s side for the past two decades.TeachKloud is a cloud-based solution for those working in creches and preschools founded by Wendy Oke, a PHD graduate from Cork Institute of Technology. The app cuts down on the administrative efforts of staff in the sector with the platform covering everything from waiting lists, attendance tracking, policies and procedures, staff scheduling and teaching plans.

Andrson is another Irish startup company that made huge strides in 2020 with co-founders Zach Miller-Frankel and Neil Dunne attracting over 5000 artists to their platform. The company attempts to match unsigned musicians with industry executives by enabling searches based on the artists’ sounds. The future of music and live music, in particular, is more than a tech platform question, though. It’s about many kinds of music and the pandemic’s impacts on aspiring artists. The Andrson startup app will help mitigate the chasm between the two and ensure that the talent which exists on this island is found for us all to enjoy well into the future.

2021 is the year of online learning as traditional in-class education continues to be affected by the pandemic. Time will tell if the trend towards online education will have a lasting effect, but this is not stopping Irish startups leading the charge to find solutions to help children with dyslexia. Druid Learning is a pioneer in combining videos, developed texts, audio notes and AI to provide students with dyslexia a platform to read effortlessly. Druid Learning is focused on equality and universal access to education for all learners and provides the tools for teachers to convert their text-based lessons into learner-friendly videos with captions. Will the rebrand of education from the classroom to software apps such as Druid Learning help create great learning outcomes for dyslexia students? These are just a few questions about online education; 2021 will bring answers.
